Gary Paulsen Visits Austin April 19th!
Can you imagine running the Iditarod twice, riding a motorcycle cross country, sailing a boat to Fiji and writing over 200 captivating and award-winning novels for children and teenagers? You can if you happen to be Gary Paulsen, whom the New York Times calls “one of the best-loved writers alive.” Paulsen continues to craft unforgettable novels filled with adventure, relationships, humor, and heart. And his latest novel, WOODS RUNNER (Wendy Lamb Books / on sale January 12, 2010 / $15.99) will once again enthrall his fans as he delves into the brutal reality of the Revolutionary War, through the eyes of a teenage boy in the midst of it. Publishers Weekly hailed the book as “illuminating and gripping” in a recent starred review. Gary will be visiting Austin on April 19, on his first tour in over 5 years.
Thirteen-year-old Samuel has been living a quiet life in the wilderness of the British colony of Pennsylvania, sheltered from the bloody war that has erupted between the American patriots and the English. But his life changes in an instant when he returns home one day to find his parents missing, and his home and community ravaged by both Iroquois and British soldiers. Now forced to enter into the war around him, Samuel sets out to find his parents and begins a life changing trip that will lead him to the British headquarters in New York City, and face to face with his enemies.
“I wrote WOODS RUNNER because I wanted the Revolutionary War to be seen in its reality, “said Paulsen. “ I wanted to dispute the mythic, clean, even antiseptic qualities in many histories, because war is never, not ever, clean.”
WOODS RUNNER is sure to leave its mark on all who read this incredible story of one teenage boy and his harrowing and horrifying journey to save his family. Young readers will see the American Revolution in a new light, and educators will welcome this novel onto their bookshelves.
And, the follow-up to the much-loved novel Lawn Boy is coming this month! LAWN BOY RETURNS will continue the story of the 12-year-old lawn-mowing mogul. The book will be published March 23rd.
Gary is embarking on his first tour in over 5 years this April, and his fans are going to be thrilled to have the opportunity to meet their beloved author. Gary will be visiting Austin on April 19, and will be appearing at:
