News for November 2011Once again, we hope this newsletter finds you happy and fruitful in your craft. Below are a few brief mentions of the last of the 2011 events and a look toward a shiny, brand new year packed with promise and productivity! We are thrilled to sponsor a phenomenal outreach to benefit the Friends of the Bastrop Public Library. From now until December 8th, the date of our Holiday Hoedown, we are asking illustrators and authors from all over Texas to donate a book and/or make a monetary contribution to the ASCBWI Bastrop Library Fund. The library is in need of all kinds of children’s books – from picture books to YA – as a vast number of books were checked out and sadly burned in the wild fire. Access the link above to see how together we can help a community heal through the joy and love of Kid Lit. Saturday, Nov. 12: Monthly Meeting at BookPeople featuring Lindsey Lane presenting her VCFA grad lecture – Out On The Bendy Branches: Shifting The Paradigm From “Write What You Know” To “Write What You Think You Can’t” – an incredibly bold look at the fortitude required in believing in and caring for the artist that lives within us all. This meeting is not-to-be-missed and the perfect topic for our final monthly meeting of the year. The meeting is preceded by an Open Critique Group Session that meets at 9:30 on the 3rd floor. Thursday, Dec. 8: Join us for the second annual Holiday Hoedown, from 5:30 to 7:30 at Opal Divine’s Marina, as we celebrate the blessings of being a part of the Austin SCBWI creative community. Light snacks will be provided. Beverages are purchased by you on an individual basis. To attend you MUST reserve a spot for you and an optional guest. To do so, simply send Debbie a note via the RA Contact Page on the chapter website. Get set for prizes, great fun, and a super chance to reach out to a neighboring community in need – Bastrop. The Feb. 17 to 19th 2012 Something for Everybody Regional Conference Update: We’re excited to report that registration is very close to the half-full mark. There are still a number of critique spots and portfolio review spots still open, as well as a few places available for the Lisa Yee Intensive on Sunday. Also, thank you to those who have downloaded their registration forms and mailed them in the old-fashioned, snail mail way. We apologize for the temporary glitch we are having with our on-line banking system. We’ll be back up in no time, however don’t wait to register because of our on-line store issues! Slots are being reserved in the order that registration forms are received, so sign up as soon as you can. Lastly, take a moment to review our 2012 Calendar of Events being careful to make note of some changes in times and venues for our monthly meetings. As you can see, some of our meetings will be held at St Edwards and those at BookPeople will begin at 10:00 with the Open Critique Group to follow at 11:00. We’ll be sure to remind you about the changes as the dates draw near. All for now. Hoping to see you on Saturday! All the very best to you from us, Debbie, Carmen, and Mark |
