ASCBWI Supports World Book Night in a BIG Way

A few months ago BookPeople asked if our chapter was willing to particpate in World Book Night, an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books being held in the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland on April 23, 2012. It will see tens of thousands of people go out into their communities to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks.

Being that BookPeople is such a supportive friend of our chapter, Deb and Carmen thought, “Books + kids + free giveaway = Sure thing! How can we help?” So, on behalf of our chapter, Deb and Carmen contacted Badgerdog Literary Publishing, Dell Children’s Medical Center, SafePlace, St. Louise House, and the Inside Books Project. As a result, well over 2,000 books have been distributed to these wonderful organizations who will, in turn, place them in the hands of readers on April 23rd – World Book Night.

Publisher’s Weekly reports that, “Austin  is the top giver city per capita in the country, BookPeople is doing much of the heavy lifting, helping to distribute 5,000 books around the city.” Pretty exciting to think that our chapter played such a big role in causing Austin to be acknowledged in this way, don’t you think?

In fact, at the WBN reception, BookPeople publicist Julie Wernersbach told Debbie that the ASCBWI arranged for the most books to be given.

Debbie’s response?

“Wait till next year.”
