About Me

Mark lived in many places growing up — his native upstate New York, California, southeast Alaska and two Midwestern states — before coming to Texas to finish college at the University of Texas at Austin.

He has written and illustrated three nonfiction books for upper elementary and middle grades and illustrated for the Carus magazines “Appleseeds”, “Cobblestone” and “Cricket” and other publications.

His book “Raising ‘La Belle’”, about an early colonial shipwreck recovered off the Texas coast, won the 2003 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. (Category: “Best western juvenile nonfiction book.”)

Mark teaches classes in children’s book illustration at the Art School of the Austin Museum of Art and in an online course.
