Mark graduated from the University of Texas College of Communication, but his favorite courses in college were art history, which he snuck into his schedule along with life drawing classes. He likes to draw and paint.

His illustrations have appeared in the Carus publications AppleSeeds, Calliope, Cobblestone, Cricket, Faces, Footsteps and Odyssey.

He has illustrated several books. A BAG OF LUCKY RICE by George Reichart (Godine Publishers) was named one of the “Notable Children’s Books of 2002” by Smithsonian magazine.

A book Mark wrote and illustrated, RAISING LA BELL won the Western Writers of America Spur Award for best juvenile nonfiction for 2003, and the United States Maritime Literature Award for 2003.

Mark’s biggest influence growing up was his father, who read to him and his brothers every night (everything from Beau Geste to the complete 16 volume set of the Golden Book Encyclopedia.)

His biggest cultural influences were Classics Illustrated comics, Mad magazine and anything Walt Disney.

He lives in northwest Austin (near grandchildren) and is working on a new book.
