My non-fiction has been accepted by APPLESEEDS, CALLIOPE, COBBLESTONE, DIG, FACES, and ODYSSEY. I’ve written about archeological sites in Peru and Bolivia, a medical experiment in Cameroon, the U. S. Constitution, maps, and the philosophy of identity (yes, for kids!). DIG also accepted my photographs of Bolivia.
HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN, SKIPPING STONES, and THE MAILBOX have accepted my short fiction. In 2002, “Mr. Bellow Lost His Cello” won Byline Magazine’s national picture book competition; since it is not yet published, however, Mr. Bellow is still seeking his cello.
Education and Professional Work
I received my B.A. from Wellesley College and M.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have worked, published, and conducted training in state and national education policy, particularly curriculum and technology. I have also taught teachers-in-training.
Affiliations
I am a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and have attended numerous conferences, an SCBWI-sponsored retreat for writers of middle-grade fiction, and Highlights Foundation’s Children’s Writers Workshop in Chatauqua and the Whole-Novel Workshop. I am also a board member of, among other organizations, the Austin Children’s Choir.
My Life
While writing for kids, I divide my time between Austin, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts. I also travel (six continents so far), cook, play with grandchildren, and, of course, read.
